Urinary Track Infection

Treatment Options For Urinary Tract Infections
Written by Barbara Green
Treatments for urinary tract infections, or UTIs, hit a wide range of options from antibiotics to certain combinations of whole foods.

So what works? As everybody’s system works differently it’s hard to have one solution that works for everyone. For most people it requires some trial and elimination to decide what works or doesn’t work for the individual. This includes which antibiotics work best in each case.

Antibiotics

For instance the common antibiotic most prescribed is amoxicillin and this particular antibiotic simply does not work for me. I would usually have to get cipro. With this individual need in mind let’s explore some of the possible treatments. Since I’ve mentioned them already, we will talk about the antibiotics first.

There are many that may be prescribed depending on the severity of the infection and your doctors chosen antibiotic of choice. As I have stated above amoxicillin is a usual first choice. Here are some of the other choices: bactrim, cipro, cotrim, septra, levaquin. These are all names or varieties of certain types of antibiotics-just like amoxil and trimox are of the amoxicillin variety.

So there are different types of antibiotics you can try. If one type doesn’t work another type, for instance like the sulfur based ones, might be best.

Homeopathic Remedies

There are homeopathic remedies available. Before trying anything of that nature you should see a naturopathic physician or a holistic medical doctor for correct dosage and herbal substances.

The herbs golden seal, horsetail, and uva ursi are examples of herbs that might be used. Herbal teas may be part of the treatment, cleavers or marshmallow root would be two examples of teas used. There are many more herbs that could be combined or used alone for UTI treatment.

There are also liquid herbal remedies rather than a pellet form that could be suggested for use also. Usually with a UTI the urine is quite acidic and can be brought to an alkaline state by using minerals. Both potassium citrate and sodium citrate can be used for this purpose for example. It is necessary to take just what dosage of herbal remedies is recommended.

It is not good to take more than the recommended dosage as herbal substances can be as lethal as any prescribed medicine. Just because it is a natural substance, generally without side effects, doesn’t mean you can abuse the usage. Too, you must keep in mind that natural, or herbal remedies, take a little longer to work as a general rule than most of the chemical antibiotics. So patience may be required.

Drink Lots Of Water

With either antibiotics or herbal treatments it will be recommended that you drink lots of water. This is absolutely necessary as it helps flush out your Urinary Tract.

Preventative Measures

Drinking lots of water consistently is a good way to prevent UTI’s. Likewise, cranberry or blueberry juice without sugar sweeteners and taken regularly will help prevent the infections. The juices can be sweetened by pure apple or grape juice.

A natural preventative measure that helps guard against Urinary Tract Infection is D-Mannose. This can be purchased from a health food store. Used regularly this natural substance will help prevent bacteria from sticking to the urethra and bladder walls so infections can’t get a foothold.

These preventative measures will not get rid of an infection, they only help prevent one from taking hold in the first place. They need to be taken, or drank, throughout the day and if a few days are skipped that may be the only opening an infection needs to settle in. In other words, if using the above preventative measures you must be very diligent with the use.

Complications

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are not to be taken lightly. Besides the pain and uncomfortable symptoms they cause they can be very debilitating. If the infection spreads to the kidneys, or a man’s prostate, the results can cause damage that could be irreversible.

Whenever you suspect a UTI you should go to either a regular medical doctor, a naturopathic doctor, or a holistic medical doctor right away. Somewhere you know you will get reliable care.

Summary

Urinary Tract Infections have several treatment options that include both antibiotics and a selection of holistic health treatments. Whichever treatment option you choose, you need to make sure and seek treatment if you suspect you have a urinary tract infection as complications can be severe.

Urinary Tract Infection symptoms can include pain or a burning sensation during urination. The symptoms can also include cloudy or strong smelling urine, a pain in your lower back or side, or a fever.
